The Argentine Black and White Tegu (Salvator merianae) is one of the largest and most popular pet lizards in the world. It is known for its bold black and white banded pattern, powerful build and surprisingly calm, intelligent temperament. Native to the forests and grasslands of South America, it can reach about 3 to 4 feet in length as an adult, and with regular gentle handling it becomes tame and even recognises its keeper.
Tegus are omnivores. A healthy diet includes quality protein such as insects, rodents and cooked eggs, along with fruit and vegetables. They need a spacious, warm enclosure with a basking spot, UVB lighting, high humidity and deep substrate for burrowing. A long-lived and rewarding reptile for keepers ready for a big lizard.
